The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() 307-314 (and a tiny bit on a few of the preceding pages. There is what looks like a small grease stain at the lower corner, affecting the fore-edges of pp. On the verso the rear endpage is the small remnant of what looks like a bookplate (about 2 & 1/2" long by 1/2" deep). Inside the book, there is some offsetting to the pastedowns and endpages (a few small stains on the front end page as well) and each pastedown has a gash in the paper about 2" long descending from the top edge (I have no explanation for this but the pastedown is not detached). Overall, I would grade the book as very good minus - however, it presents as near fine from the outside. ![]() (Note: photos on request!) The book, with clean cloth covers, tight binding and sharp corners (one mildly tapped) has a thin strip (about 1/2 cm.) of darkened cloth on the upper spine tip. Both book and jacket have flaws, of varying degrees of seriousness, which I am going to describe as carefully as possible. First US edition, first printing (no additional printings noted). Jacket Design: Alvin Lustig (illustrator). ![]()
