The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() 307-314 (and a tiny bit on a few of the preceding pages. There is what looks like a small grease stain at the lower corner, affecting the fore-edges of pp. On the verso the rear endpage is the small remnant of what looks like a bookplate (about 2 & 1/2" long by 1/2" deep). Inside the book, there is some offsetting to the pastedowns and endpages (a few small stains on the front end page as well) and each pastedown has a gash in the paper about 2" long descending from the top edge (I have no explanation for this but the pastedown is not detached). Overall, I would grade the book as very good minus - however, it presents as near fine from the outside. ![]() (Note: photos on request!) The book, with clean cloth covers, tight binding and sharp corners (one mildly tapped) has a thin strip (about 1/2 cm.) of darkened cloth on the upper spine tip. Both book and jacket have flaws, of varying degrees of seriousness, which I am going to describe as carefully as possible. First US edition, first printing (no additional printings noted). Jacket Design: Alvin Lustig (illustrator). ![]()

Metamorphosis book5/22/2023 ![]() Combining the fluidity and lyricism of Lemn Sissay’s adaptation and Frantic’s uncompromising physicality, this promises to be an unmissable retelling of Franz Kafka’s shocking tale of cruelty and kindness a visceral and vital depiction of humans struggling within a system that crushes them under its heel.Ĭommissioned and Produced by Frantic Assembly, in a co-production with Theatre Royal Plymouth, Curve, MAST Mayflower Studios and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. But that world explodes on this morning of brutal metamorphosis. Gregors totally abrupt and unexplained transformation is juxtaposed with a lot of really mundane day-to-day details (waking up late, cleaning house) and the result is, well, textbook Kafkaesque. Until now Gregor has woken every morning, quietly left to take the same train, and worked to pay off the family debt. The Metamorphosis is a story about a man, Gregor Samsa, who wakes up as a gigantic, incredibly disgusting bug. ![]() ![]() Worse than that, he is a burden.Ī word said, an action out of place, the opening of old wounds, none of which can be undone. Story of my cousin rachel5/22/2023 ![]() In the seven decades since the film’s release, critics and academics have been almost unanimous in their disapproval of the film’s depiction of a damsel in distress who relies on feminine charms to get her way. Born to Rebel by Mary Allsebrook5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Mary Allsebrook's light-hearted and extremely readable account of her mother's extraordinary experiences shows Harriet Boyd to be truly one of America's pioneers. While the past and its arts were her profession, the present and the future were her passionate interest - whether local social problems in her home town of Boston or international affairs which took her to lunch with Mrs Roosevelt at the White House. While prominent as a lecturer and teacher, archaeology was only a part of her life: in 1897 she was nursing with the Red Cross in the Greco-Turkish war, in 1915 she was nursing Serbian typhoid victims on Corfu, and by 1917 she was in Northern France setting up a rehabilitation centre within sound of the front. She was the first woman to lecture to the Archaeological Instituite of America - ten times in fourteen days in January 1902. Justyce dear martin5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Picture the scene: A New York Times bestselling author, a literary world podcaster and me, a nerve-wrecked teen sitting among the two as if it wasn’t my first interview of the sort. In December, I had the pleasure of interviewing Stone at VOX Teen Communications alongside Alison Law as a part of Law’s podcast, Literary Atlanta. What Stone achieves through her timeless novel that parallels adverse realities of police brutality, interracial relationships, and self-discovery is the spark of conversation needed about the injustices that define our society, for while the characters may be fictional, the story is anything but. Her debut novel “Dear Martin” chronicles the life of high-school senior Justyce McAllister as he faces many trials of prejudice and blatant racism, all the while performing a self-assigned experiment in which he attempts to address situations the way Martin Luther King, Jr., might have. Atlantan Nic Stone - creator, artist, mother, and now newly published author - has highlighted our continuous struggle to define who we are in a world that constantly tries to do so for us. ![]() |
